'This Is Us' Season 3 Will Kick Off with the Big 3’s 38th Birthday
Loyal viewers are counting down to next month's return of NBC's smash hit “This Is Us.”
“Extra's” Terri Seymour caught up with the cast to get the scoop on the new season as they celebrated their second consecutive Emmy nod for Outstanding Drama Series.
Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley, who play siblings Randall, Kate and Kevin Pearson, revealed the new season kicks off with the Big 3's 38th birthday.
Brown explained, “We aren't having a big celebration this year… we've got a lot of other things going on." Metz added, “They are each doing their own thing… not every birthday has to necessarily be happy,” and Justin hinted at some drama, “Some stuff happens that is pretty emotional.”
Viewers will also see “Extra's” own Mario Lopez this season. Terri asked Sterling who would win in an ab-off, Mario, Justin or himself, and Brown joked, “Mario. It's never going to be me… what I want to do is be in contention for everything as long as I'm in the same breath, I'm winning, but no, Mario wins hands down!”
What else is ahead next season? We can expect rough times ahead for Randall and wife Beth. Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth, said, “It's going to get, from what I hear, a little ugly.”
Kate and Toby will be dealing with Toby's depression. Chrissy said, “We are going to see what that looks like for their relationship. Newlyweds that can't be easy... and how Kate is going to show up for Toby as he did for her.”
Milo Ventimiglia, who plays their father Jack Pearson, revealed fans can expect “happy tears, sad tears, all the tears.”
Mandy Moore, who plays his onscreen wife Rebecca, insisted, “There's definitely tears… like you will feel all of your feelings.”
Fans will see a lot more of Jack and Rebecca's early days, and Jack's time in Vietnam.
Show producers recently revealed Michael Angarano will play the adult version of Jack's brother Nicky. Milo gushed, “He's an amazing, amazing actor that I've been a fan of for a very long time.”
Mandy also told Terri that plans for delving into Rebecca and Miguel's relationship have been postponed. “I'm hearing that the Rebecca / Miguel storyline will be... a little bit more toward Season 4.”
Meanwhile, Milo and Sterling are preparing to go head-to-head at the Emmys this year in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama category.
Milo told Terri, “I'm grateful that people are looking at the work that I'm doing, and putting it in a category of other amazing actors. For me personally, it feels like a reflection of all the artists who contribute to Jack.”
Sterling gushed, “It's so crazy. You stay at home and watch these awards year in and year out and you wonder, 'Man, what must it be like to win an Emmy? Like what must be like to be in that room with all of those famous people?' And then you get a chance to go to the party like not one year, but two years, but three years in a row… I still can't believe I'm me, like I really don't believe that it's happening."
Season 3 kicks off Sept. 25 on NBC.
