Robert De Niro's F-Rated Message to President Trump at the Tonys
Acting legend Robert De Niro, appearing on the Tonys telecast in order to introduce a performance by Bruce Springsteen, surprised the room by announcing, "I just want to say one thing: f--- Trump. It's no longer, 'Down with Trump.' It's f--- Trump."
The unscripted moment left production people shocked, though it was caught in time to censor the audio before he continued with his speech about the Boss.
The crowd's reaction was a standing ovation.
The outburst is sure to lead to controversy in the wake of recent debates about appropriate language by entertainers, including high-profile kerfuffles involving Kathy Griffin, Michelle Wolf, Roseanne Barr, and Samantha Bee.
De Niro on Trump: 'I'd Like to Punch Him in the Face'
View StoryDe Niro's distaste for Trump goes way back — as early as October 2016, he was saying he'd love to punch the then-candidate in the face, referring to him as "blatantly stupid," a "punk," a "dog," a "pig," a "bullsh-t artist," and a "mutt" who "doesn't do his homework, doesn't care, thinks he's gaming society, doesn't pay his taxes."
He has played Special Counsel Robert Mueller on "SNL" recently in skits mocking Trump (played by Alec Baldwin).
President Trump is currently in Singapore ahead of a highly anticipated, unprecedented meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong-un following a highly contentious G-7 summit, at which he antagonized U.S. allies and advocated for Russia to be reinstated as a part of the group of nations.
