Queen Elizabeth Offers Inspirational Words Amid COVID-19 Crisis

"If we remain united and resolute," Queen Elizabeth II said in a rare, three-minute address to the UK and the Commonwealth, "then we will overcome it."

She was speaking about COVID-19, which has ravaged many countries, on the same day that British PM Boris Johnson, still exhibiting symptoms of the virus 10 days after his diagnosis, was admitted to a hospital to undergo tests.

In her address — only the fifth time she's given one in her 68-year reign — the Queen, 93, looking elegant and well, began by thanking all health care workers, "and those carrying out essential roles, who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties in support of us all. I'm sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times."

She also thanked citizens for staying at home, which helps flatten the curve.

"I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge, and those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any." Her words carried added weight, coming from a woman who served her country during WWII.

Speaking over footage of essential workers and of citizens applauding those workers, she also called attention to the rainbows children are drawing in response to the tough times.

The Queen also spoke movingly about life in quarantine. "And though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause, and reflect in prayer or meditation."

She referenced her first-ever broadcast, made with her sister in 1940, as part of the war effort.

"This time, we joins with all nations across the globe in a common endeavor, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal," she concluded. "We will succeed, and that success will belong to every one of us... Better days will return, we will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again. But for now, I send my thanks and warmest good wishes to you all."
