‘Furiosa’ Star Anya-Taylor Joy on Being in ‘Awe’ of Chris Hemsworth (Exclusive)
Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy are dishing on “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
“Extra’s” Freddy Lomeli spoke with Anya, who couldn’t be more complimentary of her co-star!
Anya said of teaming up with Chris, “When you are in awe of the person that you’re working with and you really care about them and you love them, it makes everything so much easier.”
The two got along from the first day they started working together. Anya added, “I was like, ‘Oh, here’s a really good person who wants to throw himself completely into this and also is going to be a partner for me. We’re going to take care of each other throughout this, rather than being at like any kind of weird ends."
Chris added, “It’s very difficult, especially if your characters don’t like each other if that spills over off the screen, it can be very complicated. And the fact that we both have the same passion about these characters, and you were so supportive of what I was doing."
He continued, "And there was a space to suggest and go, 'What if you this or what if I did this or you did that?' And that's the back and forth, the dance, the chess match, pun intended."
The chess reference is, of course to Anya's role in "The Queen's Gambit," but the two didn't get to play together while filming.
Anya explained, "The crazy thing about this film is we got to spend a lot of time together at the beginning of it, and the just because of the nature of the shooting schedule, we were kind of like thrown apart from each other for a long time. So one of the first times we came back together, we were just beating the hell out of each other."
Proving how in sync Anya and Chris are, the two have been "unintentionally matching" outfits on their press tour!
Anya laughed, "Every morning, we just look at each other, and we're like... [points finger]"
Chris joked, "As soon as we acknowledge it, it's gonna die."
Anya also opened up about how she channeled her character’s fury and rage, noting, “If you’re a woman in this world, you have that anger inside of you. I think you understand what it is to be stepped on, you understand what it is to be suppressed, not listened to, seen as unimportant, seen as less valuable. So yeah, that was there."
Chris spoke about attempting to find the humanity in his villain, Dr. Dementus. He explained that it wasn't so much about justifying his actions, but trying to "understand to some extent why he was doing things he’s done, what was his backstory, what had he suffered through and been through in order to act with some kind of rage."
He added, "But also there was something unhinged about him, which allowed there to be an unpredictable nature to it. For him to amass a following of a large group of people, he needed not only to promise them a way out of the suffering, but I think he needed to be fun to be around. So people in his gang liked being around Dementus and trusted him."
Chris commented, "It was fun to play with that and I think it's surprising them when he displays a brutal, violent act, if you've sort of been lulled into a false sense of comfort... I think it is about trying to sort of surprise people."
“Furiosa” is in theaters May 24.
