Prince Destroyed Ashes and Pictures of His Dead Son: 'He Had It All Burned'
Prince's ex-wife Mayte Garcia has broken her silence on her marriage to the late pop star, who died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in April 2016, writing in a new memoir that he destroyed every reminder of their union — including the ashes of their dead son.
People magazine reports Garcia, in her memoir "The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince," wrote that her then-husband was consumed by grief over the loss of their son Amiir, who died at 6 days old from the rare genetic disorder Pfeiffer syndrome type 2.
Prince was so devastated that at one point, years after he and Garcia divorced, he ordered his assistant to gather everything that reminded him of Garcia and their son, including all personal photos and even Amiir's ashes, and burn them.
“In some sad, painful moment, he had it all burned, as if fire could cauterize this deep wound he couldn't close,” Garcia writes in her memoir. “I wasn't there to witness it, and I can't bear to think about it now."
Garcia also provides a glimpse into the reclusive star's retreat into the Jehovah's Witness faith that seemed so at odds with his sexualized image and work, telling People, "At the time, it was giving him the answers that he liked."
In her interview with People, Garcia also admits she believes her marriage would have lasted had they not lost Amiir. “I meet a lot of people and I've learned that not many couples make it after the loss of a child. And then when you have another one, that was really hard on us.”
Garcia's memoir is out April 4 from Hachette.
