Brandon Maxwell Gushes Over BFF Lady Gaga, Plus: Why He Cries After Shooting ‘Project Runway’
Fashion designer Brandon Maxwell, who dresses some of Hollywood's biggest names, is taking his talents to “Project Runway.”
“Extra's” Renee Bargh spoke with Brandon at Universal Studios Hollywood, where he dished on the season, Meghan Markle wearing his clothes, and his BFF Lady Gaga.
The “Project Runway" judge designed Lady Gaga's Oscar gown. He gushed, “I love her so deeply and I think she has given us and the public so much… I was on vacation as it was happening… I was screaming so hard and crying, I thought my throat was going to close up… It's great to see everybody applauding her the way she deserves."
Another famous lady, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has also been seen in his clothes. He said, “It's incredible, and I do think beyond the dress and, of course, for me, I'm excited she is wearing the dress, I think about that dress that she is wearing on that day and what she's doing and all the young people that will see that and the lives she's impacting.”
Maxwell, who was a stylist before starting his own label, is able to relate to the contestants on “Project Runway,” saying, “I really feel very emotional looking at them.”
What kind of judge is he? Brandon answered, “I kind of judge, obviously, first on the challenge, but I do look at their body of work as a whole, 'cause I do understand that not every runway look is going to be their best look.”
“Also, to hear their stories, I think fashion — now more than ever — is really about the story of what you're buying,” he continued. “Of course, I have to be critical, but I think I spend a lot of time with them, am personal with them, so I think that they know it's not mean-spirited.”
The 34-year-old admitted that being critical is hard, explaining, “I cried a lot after.”
“Project Runway” airs Wednesday nights on Bravo.
