Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner Dead at 74
Jefferson Airplane guitarist and co-founder Paul Kantner has died at the age of 74.
On Thursday, Kantner passed away from organ failure, just a few days after suffering a heart attack. He had been staying at a San Francisco hospital.
After his death, band mate Marty Balin posted a statement on Facebook, writing, "So many memories rushing through my mind now. So many moments that he and I opened new worlds."
Balin continued, "He was the first guy I picked for the band, and he was the first guy who taught me how to roll a joint. And although I know he liked to play the devil's advocate, I am sure he has earned his wings now. Sai Ram 'Go with God.”
The Doors also paid tribute to Kantner after news broke about his passing. The group wrote on Facebook, "Our condolences go out to the friends, family and fans of Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane on the news of his passing. Music would not be the same without the sounds of The Doors and Jefferson Airplane, which both contributed so heavily to the signature sound of the 60s and 70s. They often shared the same bill. Celebrate them with this article of the bands' shows together in England in 1968."
Kantner is survived by three children: sons Gareth and Alexander; and China, the daughter he had with Jefferson Airplane co-member Grace Slick.
