Caroline Flack’s Cause of Death Revealed

“Love Island” host Caroline Flack, 40, died in February, and now the coroner has released her cause of death.

DailyMail.com reports British coroner Mary Hassell ruled Flack's death a suicide at Poplar Coroner's Court, in London, noting that she was in “distress” and about to stand trial for assault.

Hassell noted, “In Caroline's case I am entirely satisfied she intended to cause her own death. She hanged herself. She had only one expectation — her own death. There's no doubt in my mind at all.”

She continued, “Caroline had fluctuating mental ill health, she had had struggles in the past… She had had difficulties. In spite of the fact she may have led — to some — a charmed life, actually the more famous she got the more some of these difficulties increased —she had to deal with the media in a way most of us don't.”

“It was played out in the national press — and that was incredibly difficult for her. She faced the prospect of not working in the job she loved, losing a great deal. I find the reason for her taking her life was she now knew she was being prosecuted for certainty, and she knew she would face the media, press, publicity — it would all come down upon her. To me, that's it in essence.”

Hassell concluded, “Caroline hanged herself at home on the morning of February 15 because of an exacerbation of fluctuating ill health and distress.”

Caroline's mother Christine was watching the ruling via video, and reportedly wept as she told the coroner, “I totally agree, I think you got it spot on.”

In December, Flack left "Love Island" after being charged with assault in an incident involving her tennis-player boyfriend Lewis Burton. According to DailyMail.com, she allegedly told investigators she hit him with a phone while he was asleep because he had cheated on her. Afterward, she pleaded not guilty and was out on bail.

Flack was born November 9, 1979, in London, making her acting debut in 2001. Almost immediately, she shifted focus to hosting and reality TV, including winning the 2014 edition of "Strictly Come Dancing." She appeared on "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! NOW" (2009-2010), "The Xtra Factor" (2011-2013), and began work on "Love Island," on which viewers vote couples off an ideal island setting each week, in 2015.

Flack's death is sure to reignite controversy regarding "Love Island" — two contestants, Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, have taken their own lives in the past.
