Olivia Munn on Sexual Harassment in Hollywood, and Her Hopes for the Future
“Extra's” Renee Bargh caught up with Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash at the SAG Award nominations, just after they finished presenting this year's nominees.
Renee asked them how it felt to learn that SAG would have a female host and all female presenters, and for their thoughts on women empowerment.
Niecy replied, “I'm excited, I'm proud, I'm ready. I love that it is happening when my daughters are of age to be present to it.”
Olivia then opened up about sexual harassment in Hollywood and the time she spoke out against director Brett Ratner, who denied the allegations.
Olivia Munn Speaks Out About 'Abuse of Power' in Hollywood
View Story“It wasn't that long ago when my story became public, it was in 2011, but it didn't matter for some reason then. Then I had to deal with a lot of people… believing the other person. Now that it has all come out again, for some reason our voices matter today and I am extremely grateful and I'm excited.”
Referring to other stories of sexual harassment that have come to light, she said, “I think with every new story that comes out there are a lot of people who are shocked and they feel it is such a sad time, I think for a lot of the women who have had to deal with this for so long it is such a great time. It is such a great feeling that we don't have to live like this anymore… the really bright spot is that there are so many women that don't have to be hurt anymore.”
Munn also shared her hopes for the future, saying, “I hope that we get to a place where it's just not allowed anymore, where things are just unacceptable and that men have to think three, four, five times before they do something that could be inappropriate, or disrespectful or hurtful to a woman, or a man.”
Ratner's attorney Martin Singer previously told the L.A. Times that his client “vehemently disputes” Munn's claims.
Singer also submitted a 10-page letter to the Times, which stated, in part, “I have represented Mr. Ratner for two decades, and no woman has ever made a claim against him for sexual misconduct or sexual harassment. Furthermore, no woman has ever requested or received any financial settlement from my client.”
