Why Mary Lou Retton Revealed Her Divorce on ‘Dancing with the Stars’
It was an emotional night for Mary Lou Retton on “Dancing with the Stars,” where she broke the news that she and husband Shannon Kelley divorced earlier this year after 27 years of marriage.
After she was sent packing, “Extra” spoke with Retton, who explained her decision to share her divorce on the show. The 59-year-old asserted, “Secrets keep you locked up and it really wasn't that big of a secret, divorce. How many people go through... a lot.”

She went on about her split, “In my mind I was like, 'I lost, I am a failure,' and that's just not the case. We're just moving on, we're just moving on, it's all good, the relationship is still there.”
After her partner Sasha Farber commented that she is back on the market, Mary Lou admitted that she was not sure if she is ready to date. She smiled, saying, “I don't know, we'll see. If it happens, it happens."
Despite her elimination, Mary Lou has no regrets. She commented, “It felt great every time I came on this ballroom floor. I was ready, I was prepared, I gave it my all, and I was confident, I found that confident woman I was looking for when I started this process.”
Sasha added, “She's just so powerful and strong even though I am hurting now.”
