Huma Abedin Files for Divorce from Anthony Weiner
Hillary Clinton's aide Huma Abedin has filed for divorce from husband Anthony Weiner after seven years of marriage.
Abedin filed in New York, asking the court to seal the divorce case, according to the New York Post. She appears to be avoiding an ugly divorce battle by making it an uncontested filing, which most likely means there won't be a fight over custody of their son Jordan or their assets.
The two separated in August 2016 after he was caught in a sexting scandal with a 15-year-old girl. At the time, Abedin said in a statement, "After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband. Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life. During this difficult time, I ask for respect for our privacy.”
The divorce news comes on the same day that Weiner pleaded guilty to sexting a minor. As part of his plea deal, he had to give up his iPhone and register as a sex offender. “I accept full responsibility for my conduct,” he said tearfully, as part of his plea. "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse. I apologize to everyone I have hurt. I apologize to the teenage girl, whom I mistreated so badly. I am committed to making amends to all those I have harmed.”
The ex-congressman could face up 10 years in prison, but prosecutors predict he'll be sentenced to 21-27 months.
