Michael Douglas Opens Up on Life at 72
Only “Extra's” senior music correspondent Adam Weissler went one-on-one with Michael Douglas backstage at the TCM Classic Film Festival, where he talked about his illustrious career from his early television roles to his work on Marvel's upcoming “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”
The two-time Oscar winner said of his Hollywood career, “I'm scared about how fast it goes… You look back and you just can't believe when they talk about some of these pictures out of the '80s, the '70s, you know, 35, 40 years — it's just impossible to think it goes that fast."
Michael Douglas Dishes on Becoming a Grandpa, Plus: His Date Night with Wife Catherine Zeta-Jones
View StoryMichael is enjoying his life with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their two children, gushing, "It's a great time in my life. I don't know about the rest of the world but I'm, right now, I'm happy with our little enclave.” Proud of the work Catherine is doing as well, Michael noted, “She just finished this 'Feud' series, she has some other stuff coming on, so she's doing great.”
Along with Catherine, Douglas said that his Hollywood legend father Kirk Douglas is doing “great," too. “He's a pistol. When I come out here, I stay at my dad's house. He's got a little apartment above the garage. I cherish the fact of how fortunate I am at my age that my dad's still around. He's gonna be 101 in December, he's still sharp, got a good sense of humor and can share deep stories that go beyond being father and son.”
Though Kirk's health is good, Michael says his dad is still mourning the loss of good friend Don Rickles, the legendary insult comic who died last week. Michael pointed out, “It's been a difficult time [for my father] right now — when you get to that age, you don't have many friends left, you know? It's a little more lonely.” He did say that Kirk comes alive around Catherine. "He's a lot better when my wife's out here — he seems to perk up when Catherine's around. He says, 'Oh, my goodness, look at you, you little rascal.'”
