Meghan McCain Defends Trump After Unverified Russia Report Surfaces
FOX News Channel's “Outnumbered” co-host Meghan McCain spoke with “Extra's AJ Calloway right after President-elect Donald Trump's first press conference since the election, commenting on the heated exchange between Trump and CNN's Jim Acosta, from whom Trump refused to take a question.
McCain said, “It sets a precedent that we're going to have the press and our president be combative with one another.”
The press conference today was on the heels of headlines suggesting Russian hackers influenced the election and had information that would compromise the President-elect.
Meghan, whose father, Sen. John McCain, had reportedly seen the documents, said, “I have spoken to him. All I know is that somebody gave him this and he passed it on, but the FBI and a whole host of other people already had it and had already seen it, and this had been floating around since, my understanding last summer, and it was BuzzFeed that decided to pull the trigger.”
The 32-year old insisted Trump has every right to be upset. “He is exactly right to be defensive over these reports that BuzzFeed printed, because it has been unverified… our intelligence didn't verify anything that came out and on the Internet last night. It was pretty gross and pretty graphic, and I would be as angry as he was.” She added, “I think it's setting a really dangerous precedent for the media, that you're going to release unverified information by something that could potentially not be intelligence agencies. It's not how journalism works.”
Meghan defended Trump's response to Meryl Streep's Golden Globes speech, saying, “Hollywood needs to stop lecturing the American public about why they voted for Trump… And I found it really preachy, Hollywood helping him… The more you make him a martyr for the middle of the country, the more popular he's going to become.”
McCain does, however, think Trump should perhaps tone down his messaging on social media. “I would love it if he did [social media] only about policy for at least the first 100 days, nothing about attacking the media or gossipy, a little different than what he's been doing.”
