Nine months after his sudden death at age 66, the exact cause of Garry Shandling's passing has been determined.
According to the autopsy report obtained by TMZ, Shandling died from a pulmonary thrombosis; a blood clot that went from his legs to his lungs. He also had an enlarged heart. The death was ruled “natural” and an “accident.”
The report also noted that a day before dying, Shandling struggled with leg pain and shortness of breath.
In his 911 call on March 24, Shandling told a dispatcher that he couldn't breathe, and collapsed while speaking on the phone.
The autopsy report also revealed that Shandling had Xanax and opiate painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone in his system at the time of his death.
His death certificate also noted that just prior to his passing, he underwent an operation to apply a vena cava filter to "capture an embolism, a blood clot that has broken loose from one of the deep veins in the legs on its way to the heart and lungs."
