Taylor Swift Reveals in Emotional Letter to Fans That Her Mom Has Cancer
“This is something my family and I thought you should know about now,” Taylor Swift wrote to her fans in a heartfelt post on Tumblr, in which she revealed that her mother, Andrea Finlay, 57, has been diagnosed with cancer.
The 25-year-old singer explained in an open letter to fans that she had asked her mom for another Christmas gift, to get a health screening. “The results came in, and I'm saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer,” Swift wrote.

Swift continued that it was important to her mom that her fans knew. “She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She's got an important battle to fight.”
“Extra” first met Taylor Swift and her mom at a 2006 concert. Finlay has always been close to her pop star daughter, and was even featured in Swift's music videos, “The Best Day” and “I'm Only Me When I'm with You.”
Swift surprised her mother with the song “The Best Day” as a Christmas gift, along with a virtual love letter that showed the budding star growing up with Finley throughout the years.
“I had this idea that I wanted to play it for her for Christmas. So, when I got the track, I synced up all of these home videos from when I was a little kid to go along with the song like a music video, and played it for her on Christmas Eve and she was crying her eyes out,” Swift revealed in a statement.

The singer's mom has been Swift's constant red carpet support, often being her “date” to award shows, including when Swift won her first major ACM award in 2008 and delivered a moving speech after dedicating the award to her mother.
“She was sleeping in rental cars and in airplanes with her mouth hanging wide open because she was so tired,” Swift expressed about her mother's dedication to her career. “Thank you so much, I love you, this is for you.”
Swift did not give details on what kind of cancer her mother was diagnosed with, saying only that she would “like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”
She added, “She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they've got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle.”
Swift explained that she wrote about the news because it's important, and she's used to sharing events in her life with her fans, whether it's in the form of a song or a photo.
“I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now.”

Taylor ended, “Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this.”
