'Dancing' with Controversy: Chaz Bono vs. Haters
"Dancing with the Stars" hot-button contestant Chaz Bono stopped by The Grove to talk with "Extra" host Mario Lopez about why he's doing the show -- and addressed those who object to his participation.
The transgender advocate responded, "They have an agenda they're trying to push, and that's what their deal is."
He admitted he didn't expect the controversy when he said yes to "DWTS." "I didn't really think about it that much, to be honest. If anything, it kind of motivated me. I thought it would be fun to physically challenge myself in this way now that I'm finally comfortable in my body.
Does Chaz like to dance? "I do, but I am really shy. If I can let that go, I really enjoy it, but it's hard for me to sometimes let it go."
One thing Bono is sure of: his costumes will not be too over-the-top. "I'll be in a lot of black with little highlights of things here and there. I'm also just getting used to those high-waist pants. They are kind of a trip!"
He laughed, adding that he had a greater appreciation for his mother, Cher, and her love for onstage costume changes. "What she said was, 'Now maybe you understand what I go through a little bit,' which I do."
Check out Bono's first performance when "Dancing with the Stars" premieres Monday, September 19 on ABC!
