TV Chimp Attacks, Victim Critical
Charla Nash, 55, is facing "life-changing, if not life-threatening" injuries after being mauled by a chimpanzee on Monday in Connecticut -- which was later killed by a police officer.
Chimp Travis, who has starred in commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, inexplicably attacked Nash, a friend of his owner Sandra Herold. The chimp reportedly lunged at Nash when she exited her car after arriving to help Sandra get the 200-lb. Travis back inside the house.
Herold rushed to her friend's defense, calling 911 and stabbing Travis in an effort to get him off of Charla. Nash is currently in critical condition, and is facing "life-changing, if not life-threatening" injuries to her hands and face, Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy told the NY Post. Police captain Richard Conklin added, "It was a very brutal attack."
Travis was fatally shot by police after the animal ran toward officers, who retreated to their cars in defense. This is the first time the 15-year-old chimp -- who was toilet trained, dressed himself and ate at the table -- has attacked anyone.
