The 30-year-old was arrested Wednesday on felony weapons charges during a sweep in the Weston Ranch area of Stockton, California.
Once the Stockton Police Department posted Meeks’ mugshot on their Facebook page, the comments came pouring in. See some of them here.
Following an increase in shootings and robberies, Meeks was one of four men arrested in a multi-agency operation. He faces five weapons charges and one gang charge, police said, and is being held on $900,000 bail.
Speaking from jail, the tattoo-covered Meeks, who previously served nine years in prison for grand theft, said he said he learned of his newfound fame when he spoke with his wife.
“I just visited my wife and she said I blew up all over Facebook,” he told News 10. “I appreciate [the attention] but I just want them to know that this is really not me. I'm not some kingpin.”
His mother agrees, and she insists that her son is innocent. She set up a GoFundMe page to raise $25,000 to get him a fair trial.
She writes on the page, “He has a job and he was on his way to work, with no gang affiliations as per two of the charges. He has old tattoos... which causes him to be sterotyped [sic]. He's my son and he is so sweet. Please help him to get a fair trial or else he'll be railroaded.”
Meeks' arraignment is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Convicted felon Jeremy Meeks’ blue-eyed mugshot was a big hit on social media, generating more than 2,400 swooning comments.
