Grammys 2021 Live Blog: Trevor Noah, Speeches, Winners, and More!
Host Trevor Noah took center stage as the 2021 Grammys were handed out... and "Extra" was there to give you running commentary:
8:45 p.m. That's a wrap on the 2021 Grammys!
8:40 p.m. There is a Beatle in the house... Ringo Starr is presenting Record of the Year! And the award goes to Billie Eilish! She tells Megan Thee Stallion she wanted to write a whole speech about how it was for her. "You deserve this... I root for you always... genuinely this goes to her. Can we just cheer for Megan Thee Stallion?" She added, "I really do appreciate this," thanking the Academy, her team, and her brother Finneas.
8:34 p.m. Roddy Ricch performs "Heartless" at the piano, followed by a moving rendition of "The Box."
8:26 p.m. K-pop band BTS light up the stage with "Dynamite," and even take viewers up the stairs and onto what appears to be an outdoor stage with the city skyline in the background. As it turns out they weren't actually in the house, but had prerecorded their performance.
8:24 p.m. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. gives a prerecorded message about making serious changes to the Academy.
8:12 p.m. Taylor Swift just won Album of the Year for "Folklore"! She thanked boyfriend Joe Alwyn, "the first person I play every single song for," and the parents of James, Inez and Betty, "the second people I play every song for." Those famous parents happen to be Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively!
8:04 p.m. Doja Cat is definitely bringing a futuristic vibe with her "Say So" performance... including laser lights and robot-helmets for her dancers!
8:00 p.m. Beyonc just made history with her 28th Grammy win! She now has the most Grammys for a female artist with her Best R&B Performance win for "Black Parade."
“I wanted to uplift, encourage, and celebrate all the beautiful Black queens and kings that continue to inspire me and inspire the whole world,” she told the crowd.
She also gave a shout-out to daughter Blue Ivy, who took home a trophy for "Brown Skin Girl," saying, “Congratulations! You won a Grammy tonight.”
7:48 p.m. Lil Baby gives a powerful performance involving a police shooting that eventually leads to a stand-off between protesters and cops as he sings about George Floyd and ends with the lyric, "God is the only man I fear."
7:46 p.m. Dua Lipa won Best Pop Vocal Album and gushed, "This is insane!"
7:35 p.m. Post Malone gives a moody performance of "Hollywood's Bleeding" with flashing lights and smoke. He's wearing a trench coat with crosses on it, and is later surrounded by a circle of religious figures.
7:28 p.m. Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion take the stage to accept Best Rap Performance for "Savage"! Megan shares that her mom used to tell her to ask herself, "What would Beyoncé do?" and Megan always wanted to be like Bey, but "a little ratchet." Bey also added, "I have so much respect for you and I honor you for asking me to be a part of the song."
7:15 p.m. Cardi B is next with a futuristic dance number to "Up," and some pole dancing on a high heel to a censored version of "WAP." Megan Thee Stallion joins the performance, and eventually they are both showing off some sexy moves on a GIGANTIC bed. Post Malone gives them a standing ovation and Trevor Noah joins Cardi and calls the performance "amazing," while joking about the thread count on the mega bed.
7:10 p.m. Megan Thee Stallion is sparkling head to toe in her barely-there sheer Grammys look, singing "Savage."
7 p.m. Song of the Year goes to H.E.R. for "I Can't Breathe"! She says, "I've never been so proud to be an artist," while praising her fellow nominees. She also shareds a touching moment with her family, saying her dad was tears when she played it for him. She ends with, "That fight we had in us in 2020, keep that up."
6:58 p.m. Best Melodic Rap Performance goes to Anderson .Paak for "Lockdown." In a prerecorded speech, he says, "If you have a voice, don't be afraid to use it!" Bad Bunny also takes the stage to accept Best Latin Pop Album for "YHLQMDLG" and thanks his supporters.
6:49 p.m. "The house don't fall with the bones are good..." Maren Morris and John Mayer team up to sing "The Bones."
6:45 p.m. Mickey Guyton gives a powerful performance of "Black Like Me," before introducing Miranda Lambert, who follows up with her hit "Bluebird."
6:36 p.m. As the in memoriam continues, Brittany Howard, from the Alabama Shakes and Chris Martin from Coldplay perform a touching take on "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
6:27 p.m. The in memoriam section also includes a video of Eddie Van Halen playing guitar, and Lionel Richie singing "Lady" in honor of Kenny Rogers. Brandi Carlile also gives a moving rendition of the late John Prine's "I Remember Everything."
6:25 p.m. Silk Sonic is back and owning the Grammys with their tribute to Little Richard with "Good Golly, Miss Molly."
6:20 p.m. Next up is Best Pop Solo Performance... and the big winner is Harry Styles for "Watermelon Sugar"! The rock star, now wearing a purple boa, thanks everyone who made the record with him.
6:10 p.m. The much-anticipated Taylor Swift performance is next, and she doesn't disappoint! Taylor starts off with "Cardigan" as she lies on the roof of a woodland house wearing an ethereal gold-and-blue gown. She moves inside for "August" as she grabs her guitar to sing the song about summer love. Taylor ends by stepping out to the front yard to sing and dance to "Willow."
6:08: Best Country Album goes to Miranda Lambert for "Wildcard"!
6:00 p.m. This Silk Sonic performance is everything. Heart sunglasses, 1970s-style suits, and the smoothest vocals. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak are killing it with "Leave the Door Open."
5:50 p.m. "Come on, dance with me!" Dua Lipa is busting a move in a series of sparkling pink numbers as she sings a medley including "Levitating" and "Don't Start Now." Her "Levitating" collaborator DaBaby even makes an appearance!
5:44 p.m. Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez bring the club vibe with a live performance of "Dakiti"!
5:38 p.m. In a video package, DaBaby delves into his background and reflects on how fatherhood gave him purpose before performing "Rockstar" onstage with Roddy Ricch. Decked out in white, he's owning the stage, with his own choir serving as backup singers.
5:30 p.m. The Black Pumas are bringing some guitar magic and serious vocals to the stage with "Colors." Afterward, Eric reveals that six years ago, he was busking on the Santa Monica Pier, and now he's at the Grammys!
5:25 p.m. The Best New Artist winner is Megan Thee Stallion — and she looks stunned! The singer gives a shout-out to her fellow nominees as she thanks God before she is interrupted by a car in a candid moment. She also thanks her mother, who "always believed I could do it."
5:22 p.m. Lizzo shows off her vocals as a presenter, singing, "'Cause I love you!" as she presents Best New Artist.
5:14 p.m. Haim is rocking out to "The Steps"!
5:10 p.m. Billie Eilish and brother Finneas are next, with the somber "Everything I Wanted." The set even includes a car like the one in the music video.
5:05 p.m. Harry Styles opens the show with "Watermelon Sugar." Noah introduces him by saying, "He will steal your heart and your dress — and look damn good doing it!" Harry gives a slowed-down version of the hit, and brings his signature style, with a shirtless black suit and long, green scarf.
5 p.m. Trevor Noah kicks off the show, joking, “I know it has been one year, but it feels like 10.” Pointing to Staples Center in the background, he promises, “This backdrop is real. My uncle isn’t going to walk behind me naked, even though I told him I had an important meeting.”
Showing off the outdoor portion of the setup, he tells the audience, “L.A. air might be as dangerous as COVID, but we are going to take the risk.” Noting that many of the nominees would be on hand, sitting together, he insists there would be more tension than a “family reunion at Buckingham Palace.”
