Michelle Obama Calls Out Trump in DNC Speech: 'He Is Clearly in Over His Head'
Michelle Obama was fired up for the kickoff of the unconventional virtual Democratic National Convention Monday night.
The former first lady came out swinging against President Donald Trump in an 18-minute prerecorded speech. Obama criticized his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, the Black Lives Matter movement, and more.
“Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy,” she said.
Obama put it plainly, “Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”
She later added, “So if you take one thing from my words tonight, it is this: if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don't make a change in this election. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it.”
Obama also shared her thoughts on Biden, saying, “I know Joe. He is a profoundly decent man, guided by faith. He was a terrific vice president. He knows what it takes to rescue an economy, beat back a pandemic, and lead our country. And he listens. He will tell the truth and trust science. He will make smart plans and manage a good team. And he will govern as someone who's lived a life that the rest of us can recognize.”
Trump hit back on Twitter Tuesday morning, writing, “Somebody please explain to @MichelleObama that Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren't for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama.”
Bernie Sanders, Andrew Cuomo and lifelong Republican John Kasich also made their case for Biden at the convention, with Kasich saying, “We're being taken down the wrong road by a president who has pitted one against the other.”
Meanwhile, Eva Longoria and Billy Porter brought the star power, as she emceed and he performed a cover of Buffalo Springfield's 1966 protest song “For What It's Worth” with Stephen Stills.
Eva previously served as a co-chair on the Obama/Biden campaign, and told us back then, “I love being a political activist… to me, it is so much more rewarding than acting.”
Just a few weeks ago, Porter also opened up about being an activist. He told “Extra's” Billy Bush of the cover song, “I hope that it ignites a fire that it reminds people that we the people have the power to create the change.”
