Drake Talks About His Once-Secret Son, Reveals Kanye Betrayed Him
For the first time outside of his music, Drake is talking about his year-old son — and he blames Kanye West for the invasion of privacy that led to his fatherhood becoming an open secret.
Us Weekly reports that Drake told Lebron James on HBO's "The Shop" in an episode that aired Friday that he confided in Kanye about the existence of his son and issues he was having with his son's mother, ex-porn actress Sophie Brussaux.
Shortly after Drake shared specific details of his situation with Kanye, he says those details began appearing in gossip stories.
"I tell him I'm having trouble with my son's mother. We had a conversation,” Drake, 31, said. “I wake up, and all these dates are out… Then the next two days, whatever, I wake up now to this text from him, passive like, 'Yo, I love you brother.'”
Then, in May, one of Kanye's artists, Pusha T, released a vicious diss track, slamming Drake for his writing. He blamed Kanye for producing that record, and replied with a diss track of his own, "Duppy Freestyle," which asserted that Drake helped Kanye write songs on his "Life of Pablo." That led to Pusha T's "The Story of Adidon," which explicitly called out Drake as a "deadbeat dad."
Saying he had recorded an even more acidic diss track in response that he decided against releasing, Drake shifted the focus back to his family, saying, "I do wanna be able to explain to my son what happened, but I don't have any desire for him to like, not love his mother. Or I don't ever want the world to be angry at his mother. We have found ourselves in a situation, and we are both equally responsible.”
“I'm just really excited to be a great father," he continued. "I have a son, he's a beautiful boy… No matter what happens, I have an unconditional love for the mother of my child because I want him to love his mother and I have to project that energy.”
West apologized to Drake in September, but Drake has yet to comment on that olive branch.
Drake is in the middle of his tour with Migos. According to StubHub, his tour is one of the top 5 selling tours of the fall.
