Why Mark-Paul Gosselaar Is Completely Unrecognizable from His 'Saved by the Bell' Days
Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar looks nothing like he used to look on his 1980s show “Saved by the Bell."
Gosselaar has traded in his clean-cut, heartthrob looks for a much more buff and bearded appearance... but why? He is gearing up for his role as a San Diego Padres baseball catcher in the upcoming FOX show “Pitch.” He recently told MTV, "Dan Fogelman told me to gain some weight and grow a beard. He didn't want anyone to recognize me.”
He understood the executive producer's thought process, explaining, “For me especially, when I watch things, I have a hard time not putting that label on somebody that I've seen in their past work. Dan had a right to do this to me.”
Mark-Paul's new look has given him complete anonymity, which he hasn't experienced in 20 years. He said, “It's amazing. I've never been in this position in my career, where I can walk into a room without anyone recognizing me. People at my kids' school don't recognize me. Old friends who I haven't seen in a while don't know it's me.”
Though his new appearance has allowed him to keep a low profile, it also has its cons. He revealed, “I'm not a beard guy. I'm not a clean-shaven guy. I'm kinda right in-between. I let it go for a week or two at the most, but this is obnoxious. My wife and I have four kids, and this is keeping us from having a fifth.”
