Erin Andrews Awarded $55 Mil for Secret Hotel Recording
UPDATE: Erin Andrews released the following statement on Twitter:
Sportscaster Erin Andrews was awarded $55 million of the $75 million she asked for in a civil trial against her stalker Michael David Barrett, West End Hotel Partners, and other defendants, whom she accused of negligence and invasion of privacy.
In 2008, Erin's stalker Michael David Barrett filmed her through peepholes on several occasions, including at the Marriott Nashville and the Radisson Airport Hotel in Milwaukee. He then posted the nude videos of Erin online, where they have been seen by approximately 16 million people. Andrews accused the hotels of making her room numbers known to Barrett, and accommodating his request for rooms next to hers.
During the trial she testified, "This could have been stopped. The Nashville Marriott could have just called me and said, 'We're putting this man that requested to be next to you, is this okay?' and I would have called the cops and we would have gotten him. It could have stopped this.”
She continued, “I have to stand up for myself. This could happen to anyone. I want the Nashville Marriott to be held responsible. I wanted to be respected, I just wanted to be the girl next door who loved sports. Now I'm the girl with the hotel scandal. It's embarrassing.”
Andrews also told the jury that she went to psychotherapy to help her move on from the incident, and used her career to try and forget about it. "It was the only way I could push forward. As soon as we talk about this, I start crying. But the second I talk about sports, or 'Dancing with the Stars,' it is my happiness, I can escape. If I can do the World Series and pass out the trophy, then people will forget. I feel like if I can go and compete on 'Dancing with the Stars' and make it to the finale, and host the show, and have all this stuff on my plate, then people will forget and, hopefully, I will forget.”
Despite her attempts to forget, she confessed, "I understand that I will always have to get treatment for this. I will always need to go talk to somebody about this. This will always be on the Internet.”
