'Star Wars' Crushes More Records, Dominates Christmas Box Office
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" continues to knock 'em dead at the box office.
The film destroyed the previous b.o. record for Christmas Day, with $49.3 million in the U.S. on Friday, more than doubling the 2009 take for "Sherlock Holmes."
Additionally, the film looked set to rake in another $140 million from U.S. theaters, taking it past the $500 million mark faster than any other film in history. It is expected to hit the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend.
What's good for "Star Wars" is good for the industry — the movie is powering the U.S. box office to its biggest Christmas weekend ever.
The movie's popularity will also be reflected at Disneyland, where several Big Thunder-themed attractions will shutter permanently on January 10 in order to make way for a slew of new "Star Wars"-themed rides. The new rides and features probably won't open for another year.
