Sofia Carson Says It Was ‘Surreal’ Filming ‘Songbird’ About COVID-19 During the Actual Pandemic
Actress and singer Sofia Carson is starring in the new science fiction thriller “Songbird,” and opening up to “Extra’s” Rachel Lindsay about how surreal it was to film a movie about the COVID-19 pandemic in the midst of the actual outbreak.
The film was one of the first to shoot in Los Angles during the coronavirus crisis, and she told Rachel, “Everything was surreal… Everything about this film, from how it came to life to how we shot it to how quickly it turned around to being released, [it] was extraordinary.”
The former Disney star didn’t have any hesitations about working on the project, “We were COVID-tested every single day. Everyone was masked and shielded. All the precautions were being taken.”
The movie, which also stars Demi Moore and “Riverdale’s” KJ Apa, takes place years in the future when there is still no vaccine. As they worked on the script, life started to imitate art. Sofia recalled, “Government curfews, martial law in certain countries, lockdowns, military patrolling the streets… all of those things started happening in real time.” She added, “The scriptwriters… were in contact with the CDC and with the government to make sure that everything we were writing about made sense.”
The thriller was produced by Hollywood legend Michael Bay, and Sofia said, “Just to say his name and then say my name shortly after still feels like a dream.”
Sofia also has new music out. “It’s incredible. It’s what I dreamt of as a little girl, to be able to have careers in film and music at the same time,” she said. Explaining the meaning behind her new song, she said, “‘Guess I’m a Liar’ is a story of heartbreak, survival… It’s when you believe that you couldn’t live without him or her and then you realize you’re alive and can love yourself better than they ever did.”
“Songbird” is available On Demand Friday.
