Drew Carey’s Ex-Fiancée Amie Harwick’s Terrifying Final Days, Plus: Her Cause of Death Revealed
Over the weekend, Drew Carey's ex-fiancée, sex therapist Amie Harwick, was killed at the age of 38.
Harwick was allegedly attacked by her ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse, causing her to fall from a third-story balcony at her Hollywood Hills home.
The LAPD told "Extra" in a statement, “On Saturday, February 15, 2020, around 1:16 a.m. Hollywood patrol officers responded to a radio call of a, 'Woman Screaming,' in the 2000 block of Mound Street in Hollywood Hills. When officers arrived, they were met by a roommate who was in the street. He informed officers that the victim was being assaulted inside of her residence. The roommate had jumped a wall and went to neighboring residences to call for help.”
“When officers went to make entry, they found the victim on the ground beneath a third story balcony. The victim was gravely injured. She suffered significant injuries consistent with a fall. The victim was unresponsive,” the statement continued. “The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the victim to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. The investigation revealed possible evidence of a struggle in the upstairs as well as forced entry to the residence. A canvass of the area located further evidence of an intruder (suspect) entering the property and leaving after the murder.”
According to the Los Angeles Coroner's Office, Harwick died of blunt force injuries to the head and torso.
Her death has been ruled a homicide.
According to law enforcement, Harwick recently “expressed fear about a former boyfriend and has previously filed a restraining order against this person.”
Harwick reportedly filed two restraining orders against Pursehouse, starting in 2011. The most recent one expired only two weeks ago.
TMZ reported Pursehouse was booked on a murder charge upon being arrested Saturday. He is currently being held on $2 million bail.
It is unknown how Pursehouse knew Harwick's home address, but he had reportedly run into her at a professional event in January, which he was assigned to photograph.
Harwick's friend and Beverly Hills sex therapist Hernando Chaves, who was also on hand for the event, told The Los Angeles Times, “It was the absolute worst possible luck.” According to Chaves, the chance encounter seemed to “reignite [Pursehouse's] obsessive preoccupation with her.”
“She did everything she could do to protect herself, and this person still sought her out and was violent toward her,” Chaves emphasized. “That is what people, I hope, are going to see — not the sensationalism of her dating Drew Carey or being a 'Hollywood sex therapist'... but that our system is not protecting women.”
Her friend Vera Duffy also discussed the run-in with Harwick, who she recently interviewed for a podcast. Duffy revealed, “She said that when he saw her, he just went ballistic. He lost it. He made a scene."
Duffy went on, “She was very scared... She said, 'What am I going to do? I let my roommate know, I have home security.'"
Harwick also expressed her fear to her friend Eric Breslow. He told KTLA, “This was a constant thing that she talked about, that she was afraid of this particular guy and it was always something that kind of followed her. It scared her enough to tell friends that, 'Gee, I think I should get some mace or pepper spray.'"
Following Harwick's sudden death, Carey told “Extra” in a statement, “Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime. She was a positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist. I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation.”
We hear that Carey's show “The Price Is Right” canceled taping new shows this week so he can mourn his loss.
