UPDATE: Ashley Massaro's daughter Alexa, 18, broke her silence on social media today. She posted a tribute on Instagram Stories, writing, “i wish i could have gotten more recent pictures. i love you mommy i want to wake up in your arms more than anything i want to give u a big hug please come back this cant be real.”
The WWE family is mourning the loss of Ashley Massaro. The 39-year-old died Thursday, reports The Blast.com.
Law enforcement sources told the site that emergency services were called to her home in Smithtown, New York at 5:23 a.m. on a report of an unconscious female.
First responders performed CPR on the way to a local hospital where she later died.
Police are still investigating, but don't believe there was any foul play. Right now, her death is classified as “non-criminal.” Her body was transported to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
According to her close friend Shelly Martinez, Massaro died from an apparent suicide. In a statement, Shelly told The Blast.com, "My best friend from the wrestling business died from suicide two days after responding to 300+ fan letters. She was the happiest I have seen her in years, so stoked that people still cared about her 11 years after her career was over. There are no signs. It comes without warning. If you are going through the worst shit in your life, just know that you are not alone. PLEASE seek help.”
The WWE tweeted, “We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro. WWE offers its condolences to Ashley's family and friends.”
