Jennifer Holliday Cancels Trump Inauguration Performance, Cites 'Lapse of Judgment'
And I am telling you, she's not going... to sing at the inauguration.
When it was announced that "Dreamgirls" and "The Color Purple" Broadway legend Jennifer Holliday would be singing at a Trump inauguration event next week, along with 3 Doors Down, Lee Greenwood, Toby Keith, and others, many of her fans cried foul.
Holliday — who voted for Hillary Clinton but had said she was performing "for the people" and not as an endorsement of President-elect Trump — sent The Wrap a letter explaining why she has now decided to pull out of the event altogether.
In the letter, the Tony- and Grammy-winning gay icon stated she changed her mind after reading a Daily Beast piece on why her initial decision to perform for Trump was "heartbreaking" for her gay fans.
Holliday apologized for being "uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history and for causing such dismay and heartbreak to my fans."
Holliday also wrote, "“My only choice must now be to stand with the LGBT Community and to state unequivocally that I WILL NOT PERFORM FOR THE WELCOME CONCERT OR FOR ANY OF THE INAUGURATION FESTIVITIES!”
She ended by addressing her gay fans specifically: “Please know that I HEAR YOU and I feel your pain. The LGBT Community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you… You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded. Thank you for communicating with me, I had no idea that I still meant so much to all of you. Thank you for your posted comments both the good supportive ones as well as the ugly hurtful ones."
