Complete List of Tony Winners, Plus: Did 'Hamilton' Break a Record?
"Hamilton," one of the most acclaimed new musicals on Broadway in years, did not break the record for most Tony wins (it won 11) previously set by "The Producers" (with 12), but it was clearly creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's night.
In a pre-taped message, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama sang "Hamilton's" praises. President Obama said, "'Hamilton' has become not only a smash hit, but a civics lesson our kids can't get enough of, one with fierce musical energy, one where rap is the language of revolution and hip-hop its urgent soundtrack."
First Lady Michelle Obama added, "It's a musical about the miracle that is America, a place of citizenship where we debate ideas with passion and conviction."
Miranda had first performed bits of the show-in-progress for the Obamas seven years earlier.
Common introduced the cast of "Hamilton," which performed "History Has Its Eyes on You" and "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)," two of the show's most popular numbers.
Capping off the show's 11 wins, living legend Barbra Streisand handed Miranda the Tony for Best Musical, making her first appearance at the ceremony in 40 years. Miranda is leaving the show soon, so prepare to get creative or take out a second mortgage if you haven't seen the show yet but want to score tickets.
