'Godfather' Star Abe Vigoda Dead at 94
Abe Vigoda, who starred in “The Godfather” and TV's “Barney Miller" has died. He was 94.
His daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, confirmed the news to the Associated Press, saying he died of natural causes.
After many years working on stage and in television, Vigoda shot to stardom in his fifties after landing the role of mobster Tessio in “The Godfather.” His newfound fame led to more parts, most notably the role of Phil Fish on ABC's “Barney Miller.” His aging cop character was so popular he even got his own spinoff, called “Fish.”
In his later years he appeared in movies like “Joe Versus the Volcano” and “Jury Duty,” and was a popular guest on “Late Night with Conan O'Brien.”
Over the years there were many false reports of his death. The hoaxes even spawned a website named IsAbeVigodaDead.com. In the past, it simply said “No.” It has since been updated to say “Yes. (February 24, 1921 - January 26, 2016).”
