Melissa Rivers Sues Clinic, Doctors Involved in Joan Rivers’ Death
After months of speculation, it has happened. Melissa Rivers filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the clinic where her mother, Joan Rivers underwent a treatment that led allegedly to her death.
According to NY Daily News, Melissa filed the lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, naming five doctors and the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic as defendants.
The suit claims that while the clinic's doctors were performing a scheduled endoscopy last August, they did an unauthorized examination and biopsy on Joan's vocal chords, which resulted in a laryngospasm and eventual cardiac arrest after Joan's brain was deprived of oxygen.
After slipping into a coma, the 81-year-old comedian died seven days later.
The clinic fired its medical director at the time and has denied any wrongdoing.
Melissa said she filed the lawsuit because of her “unwavering belief” that no family should suffer as hers did.
In the complaint, she states, “The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly almost incomprehensible. Not only did my mother deserve better, every patient deserves better.”
