John Heard, 'Home Alone' Dad, Dead at 72
John Heard, famous to movie fans as the father in the beloved "Home Alone" movies, died Friday, TMZ reports. He was 72.
TMZ reports Heard's body was discovered in a Palo Alto, California, hotel by housekeeping. Variety reports Heard was recovering there from back surgery. Police were called, but the Santa Clara Medical Examiner's office confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is not known at this time.
Heard worked extensively on TV and on the silver screen. Along with roles in the phenomenally popular "Home Alone" (1990) and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992), which made Macaulay Culkin a household name, Heard also appeared in such movies as "Cat People" (1982), the horror cult classic "C.H.U.D." (1984), "After Hours" (1985), "The Trip to Bountiful" (1985), "Beaches" (1988), "Big" (1988), "Awakenings" (1990) and "The Pelican Brief" (1993). More recently, he acted in "Sharknado" (2013), and had several films and other projects in various stages of completion at the time of his death.
He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on "The Sopranos" in 1999.
Heard was married and divorced three times, including a six-day marriage in 1979 to "Superman" actress Margot Kidder. He is survived by his son Jack (with his Oscar-winning ex-girlfriend Melissa Leo) and his daughter Annika. He was preceded in death by his son Max in December.
