Natalie Portman Says Ashton Kutcher’s ’No Strings Attached' Salary Was ‘Three Times More’ Than Hers
“Jackie” actress Natalie Portman is opening up on her own experience with the gender pay gap in Hollywood.
In the new issue of Marie Claire UK, Portman revealed that her “No Strings Attached” co-star Ashton Kutcher was paid a much higher salary to star in the movie. She said, "I knew and I went along with it… [Kutcher's quote] was three times higher than mine, so they said he should get three times more.”
Despite being paid much less, Portman admitted, "I wasn't as pissed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it's hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy.”
Portman has joined the numerous actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence, Emmy Rossum, and Robin Wright, who have voiced their disapproval over the gender pay gap. She pointed out, "Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar. In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar.”
“I don't think women and men are more or less capable,” she went on. “We just have a clear issue with women not having opportunities. We need to be part of the solution, not perpetuating the problem.”
