Former NFL Star Aaron Hernandez Commits Suicide in Prison

Former Patriots football player Aaron Hernandez, a convicted murderer, has died at the age of 27 after committing suicide in prison.
Just days after his acquittal in a double murder case, Hernandez — previously convicted of murder in the first degree — hanged himself in his cell with a bedsheet Wednesday morning.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction confirmed his death in a statement, saying, “Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.”
Before killing himself, Hernandez had "attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.” He was in a single cell when he decided to take his life on the same day that some of his former teammates were scheduled to visit the White House after winning the Super Bowl.
Hernandez was serving life in prison without the possibility of parole after he was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd in 2015. Lloyd, a football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée, was found dead in a Massachusetts industrial park near the star player's home in 2013.
In 2014, Hernandez would be charged with two counts of murder in the 2012 deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, who died in a drive-by shooting in Boston. On Friday, Hernandez was found not guilty of murder in that case, and was seen getting getting emotional after the verdict was read. His defense attorney said, "You could tell that he was relieved as well. He was charged for something somebody else did, and that is a weighty burden for anyone to shoulder."
