Charlie Sheen on His Health, Love Life and Career
Charlie Sheen has a new gig. Sheen, who recently revealed he was HIV positive, is helping LELO unveil its new condom line and opening up about why safe sex important. The actor sat down with “Extra's” AJ Calloway, also giving him an update on his health, his current love life, and career.
Charlie told AJ he feels great, thanks to taking part in an FDA trial study for a drug called PRO 140, “I'm one of the guinea pigs, I just finished week eight, and as opposed to a daily cocktail of a combination of pills that have a lot of nasty side effects, this is one shot every week… I don't have the migraines, the stomach problems… I seriously believe this is the future of treatment for HIV.”
The 50-year-old is looking good and taking good care of himself, “Exercise, diet… don't go on benders anymore, don't drink as much.” He says it was not just the diagnosis that helped him make the life change. “It was the combination of a lot of the self-loathing a lot of the shame behind it that I just wanted to keep myself divorced from reality… I just woke up one day and said, 'I deserve better.'”
Getting better and on a mission to help others with LELO condoms, “It is the first change to the condom both the appeal and technology in 70 years.” He joked about being the spokesperson, “Shouldn't a guy with five kids, a granddaughter and HIV be buying condoms and not selling them, but it does kind of make perfect sense. I don't know if there is a better 'spokesperson' past, future and present to talk about the importance of condoms and the stigma they've had for so long.”
Sheen admitted he has used the new condoms. “It's amazing, it's almost like there's nothing between you and the moment.”
Opening up about his current love life, Charlie said, “There's nobody special right now. I'm not dating. I got my hands full with dealing with my health, taking care of my family.” Sheen, who has been married three times, and was engaged to porn star Brett Rossi, revealed he has no desire to marry again. “I think I'd sooner walk on the moon in exactly what I'm wearing then head back to the altar… When you're terrible at something, why keep doing it… I'm 0 for 3.”
What he is good at is acting, and he told AJ what's next for him. “I still act, I have a movie coming out. We're hoping to debut at the Toronto Film Festival on 9/11 because the movie is about 9/11… nased on true events about 5 people in an elevator in the North tower… Whoopi Goldberg, Luis Guzman, myself.”
He may also make a return to TV, “Couple shows I'm looking at, there's been interest from a couple of the major networks, which is really cool, that's a nice shot in the arm, I think the world is starting to [realize] I'm not this hell raising lunatic that brings chaos wherever I show up.”
What is his hope for the next five years? “To honor all my commitments both personally and professionally… and to stay healthy and to keep chasing down a cure, help others.”
