Husband of Jim Carrey’s Late Ex-GF Files Wrongful Death Suit Against Actor
UPDATE: Jim Carrey released a statement to E! saying, "What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world."
He continued, "I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace."
Mark Burton, the estranged husband of Jim Carrey's late ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, has filed a wrongful death suit against the actor following her suicide last year.
According to People magazine, Burton filed the suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The suit alleges that the star used his “immense wealth and celebrity status” to obtain drugs illegally under a false name, and that he gave these drugs to White.
Burton's lawyer Michael Avenatti told People in a statement that they have asked the Los Angeles District Attorney to launch an investigation. "We look forward to the facts and evidence relating to Mr. Carrey's conduct and role in the death of Ms. White coming to light," he said.
The suit goes on to allege that Carrey sent bogus text messages to Cathriona asking about his missing prescriptions to "cover-up his conduct and complicity in her death” and accuses the comedian of “controlling and manipulating White.”
Burton also filed claim against Carrey's physician, stating they "were engaged in a conspiracy to wrongfully and illegally provide medications to Carrey under false names."
The court documents state that White overdosed on Ambien, Propranolol, and Percocet. According to People, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter had previously confirmed that those drugs, plus Zofran, were found near her body.
In July 2016, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office confirmed that two suicide notes were found at the scene, both addressed to “Jim."
Carrey has not responded to the suit so far. After her passing, the actor released the following statement: "I am shocked and saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona. She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."
Cathriona and Jim broke up a week before her death in September 2015.
