Meghan Markle Recalls Her Heartbreaking Miscarriage
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are sharing a heartbreaking loss with the world.
In a piece for The New York Times, Markle revealed that she suffered a miscarriage in July.
While changing their son Archie’s diaper, Markle “felt a sharp cramp.” She wrote, “I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”
Megan also opened up on the moment when they lost their second child. She wrote, “I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband's hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we'd heal.”
Referencing an interview from 2019 in which a reporter asked, “Are you okay?,” Megan recalled, “Sitting in a hospital bed, watching my husband's heart break as he tried to hold the shattered pieces of mine, I realized that the only way to begin to heal is to first ask, 'Are you okay?'”
“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” Meghan emphasized.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, approximately 10% of all pregnancies result in a miscarriage. Markle referenced that fact, writing, “Despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”
Discussing the COVID-19 election and the presidential election, Markle wrote, “We aren't just fighting over our opinions of facts; we are polarized over whether the fact is, in fact, a fact. We are at odds over whether science is real. We are at odds over whether an election has been won or lost."
“As much as we may disagree, as physically distanced as we may be, the truth is that we are more connected than ever because of all we have individually and collectively endured this year,” she added.
Some of the other big names to share their heartbreak over miscarriages include Chrissy Teigen and Christina Perri.
Earlier this week, Perri broke the news that she lost her second child. She wrote on Instagram, “last night we lost our baby girl. she was born silent after fighting so hard to make it to our world. she is at peace now and will live forever in our hearts.”

Just weeks ago, Perri revealed that she was hospitalized due to pregnancy complications.
In a recent interview with “Good Morning America,” Teigen and her husband John Legend opened up on their decision to document their loss with pictures.
Teigen said, “I definitely give myself permission to have complete and utter grief. Every day is so different, so when people ask me how I'm doing, I always say, 'I'm okay, today.'"

View StoryLegend shared, “I didn't know that we could experience this grief and also share it, but when we did, it really meant so much to so many people and it was such a powerful experience for me to learn that. I'm just grateful that my wife was courageous enough to do it."
