Kevin Spacey Accused of Sexually Harassing 14-Year-Old Actor in 1986, Plus: Why He Is Being Slammed for His Apology
UPDATE: Amid the allegations, The Hollywood Reporter reports that "House of Cards" is ending after six seasons.
“House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey has been accused of sexual misconduct by "Star Trek: Discovery" actor Anthony Rapp.
In a BuzzFeed article published Sunday evening, Rapp claimed that Spacey, then 26, came on to him when he was 14.
The alleged encounter took place in 1986 after a party at Spacey's Manhattan apartment. The two actors, both enjoying success on Broadway at the time, had met earlier that year. According to Rapp, he became bored at the party — at which he was the only non-adult — and ended up watching TV in Spacey's bedroom until noticing that everyone had left and it was after midnight. He told BuzzFeed, "My memory was that I thought, 'Oh, everybody's gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home.' My impression when [Spacey] came in the room was that he was drunk.”
“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me,” Rapp claimed. "He was trying to seduce me. I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Rapp said he eventually pushed Spacey away. He said, "I was like, 'What is happening?' I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, 'Oh. He's gay. I guess.' Then I opened the door, and I was like, 'Okay, I'm going to go home now.' He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, 'Are you sure you wanna go?' I said, 'Yes, good night,' and then I did leave.”
The 46-year-old actor, who is openly gay, reflected, "The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn't happen. And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can't believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.”
In response to Rapp's allegations, Spacey said in a statement on Twitter, "I'm beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
The two-time Oscar winner faced backlash for also using the opportunity to reveal, after decades of gossip and speculation, that he is gay. He said, "This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closes to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior."
Many took to social media to excoriate Spacey for coming out as gay as part of an apology to a person with whom he was allegedly sexually inappropriate.

@BeauWillimon
Kevin Spacey has just invented something that has never existed before: a bad time to come out.
@billyeichner
The classiest way to come out of the closet is as a PR smokescreen to distract people from the fact that you tried to molest a child.

No no no no no! You do not get to “choose” to hide under the rainbow! Kick rocks! https://t.co/xJDGAxDjxz
@iamwandasykes
Kevin Spacey: My sexuality is none of your biz.
@LarzMarie
Anthony Rapp: Kevin Spacey assaulted me when I was 14.
Kevin Spacey: I'm a proud gay man!
Nope to Kevin Spacey's statement. Nope. There's no amount of drunk or closeted that excuses or explains away assaulting a 14-year-old child.
@fakedansavage
Bye bye, Spacey goodbye, it's your turn to cry, that's why we've gotta say goodbye. #ROSEARMY

Hey @KevinSpacey you can choose to act like a pervert; you can't "choose" to be gay. 🤨🤦🏻♂️
