Bill Maher Slams His Friend Roseanne as 'Racist,' ABC May Reboot 'Roseanne' Around Sara Gilbert
Bill Maher, who has been a friend of Roseanne Barr's for more than 20 years, slammed her on Friday's "Real Time with Bill Maher" episode over the racist tweet that led to her hit show's cancellation by ABC.
"It was a tough week for the line," he joked. "You know the line? The one that comedians sometimes cross."
"Half the country wants Roseanne to go away forever, and half the country wants Samantha Bee to go away forever," he went on, referencing Bee's controversial use of the C-word to attack Ivanka Trump, which some critics have tried to liken to Roseanne's more consequential language.
Saying Roseanne "will always be my friend," Maher nonetheless said, "She has said she has multiple personalities and, unfortunately, one of them is quite racist."
In 1994, Barr revealed she has multiple personality disorder.
TMZ reports that ABC is in talks to reboot the "Roseanne" reboot, recasting the focus on the character's adult daughter Darlene, played by producer Sara Gilbert. John Goodman is reportedly "very interested" in this possibility.
