CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Carrie Underwood on Being a Mom, a Vegetarian, and a Patriot
“Extra's” AJ Calloway was with Carrie Underwood fresh off her co-hosting the 50th anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards, and she was still basking in the glow from the big night!
The country music superstar made some impressive outfit changes during the CMAs. “I think it ended up being 12 by the end of the night," she admitted.
Carrie won big, taking home Female Vocalist of the Year and getting emotional onstage. She said, "It was there were so many thoughts going through my head switching from our hosting stuff and suddenly I was off script. I was like, 'What am I supposed to say?' So I got kind of flabbergasted.”
The 33-year-old is currently busy on her Storyteller tour, and is taking her son Isaiah along for the ride. “He comes with us," Carrie tells "Extra," noting, "His toys are everywhere! We live on a tour bus and we're just in random cities, but family is so important to me — couldn't imagine it any other way.”
Carrie said Isaiah, who is "a little over a year and a half" is "everywhere! He's a climber, he jumps off of stuff, he's completely and totally fearless, which makes me so fearful.” But Carrie does let her son explore, saying, “It's a fine balance of keeping him from really hurting himself and little bumps and bruises. I try to not be too overprotective.”
Since Carrie spends so much time on tour, AJ asked her what her three must-haves are for on the road. Carrie replied, “My son, my dogs, and my gym... We have a mobile gym we take everywhere with us.”
The singer keeps a healthy lifestyle even while traveling so much. She is "always vegetarian" and does "my best to be vegan.” It can be tough to be vegan on the road, but Carrie says she relies on microwave meals so she knows she always has something to eat.
Carrie also revealed her guilty pleasure: “Red wine.”
On Friday, she hit the stage to perform for military families on the new Carnival Vista cruise ship. The celebration was part of Carnival Cruise Line's commitment to working with service members through Operation Homefront. “To be able to say thank you to some really incredible military families," Carrie said, "I'm putting on a show in the theater in the ship. I've never performed on a cruise ship — it will be fun!”
Up next, Carrie will head to New Zealand and Australia with Keith Urban till Christmas.
