JFK’s Only Grandson Makes First TV Appearance: Is He Ready for Politics?
President John F. Kennedy's only grandson, Jack Schlossberg, 24, made his first TV appearance on Friday alongside his mother, Caroline Kennedy.
Jack and Caroline sat down with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show to talk about Sunday's John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, which will be presented to President Barack Obama.
Lauer asked Schlossberg, a recent Yale graduate headed to Harvard Law School, what he learned from his grandfather's legacy. Schlossberg said his favorite of JFK's speeches was the moon speech at Rice University.
“He said that great challenges are actually great opportunities. I think that is a really important thing to remember today for my generation,” Jack said. “When it seems like things couldn't be any worse… we can rise to the occasion if we choose good leadership.”
Does he feel pressured to go into politics? “I'm inspired by my family's legacy of public service. It's something that I'm very proud of, but I'm still trying to make my own way, figure things out, so stay tuned.”
His mother, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, said she will “support any decision he makes.”
JFK would have been 100 this May 29th. Caroline will be 60 in November.
They also spoke of Caroline's political aspirations. Jack said, “I love her so much, but that's her decision and I'll leave it at that.”
Jack also praised Obama for his commitment to the environment and health care. "That takes political courage and we're seeing today it's pretty easy to criticize without offering solutions, and that President Obama did not do that,” Schlossberg said. “He had the courage to govern responsibly.”
