“Extra's” Renee Bargh sat down with Cruise in Paris, where he commented on his “Top Gun” co-star Val Kilmer, who is returning for the sequel!
Despite his recent cancer battle, Val is reprising his role as Iceman. Along with noting how “special” it is to work with Val, Tom shared, “He's doing really well.”
Cruise is taking a break from shooting “Top Gun: Maverick” to promote his newest movie, the sixth installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.”
In “Fallout,” Tom is back as Ethan Hunt, the spy who manages to get himself into the most precarious situations and still come out the other side unscathed. In real life, Tom did not making it through the film unharmed, breaking his ankle on set filming a scene in which he tried leaping from building to another. He pointed out that it wasn't necessarily the most painful injury he has ever endured, saying, “No, I mean listen, I've broken a few bones in my time and it was just another broken bone. It was unpleasant. Definitely unpleasant… I knew instantly when it happened… I was like, 'Dammit, I broke it.'”
“They were concerned if I'd be able to run again. I was like, 'No, I'm gonna be running again,'” Tom continued. “They said maybe in six months. And I had to be running in the next couple of weeks.”
Tom explained why he had no choice but to get back to work, emphasizing, “I had to. What choice did I have? I had a release date!” He smiled, adding, “I had friends calling, 'Hey, man, you broke your foot — you wanna come down and come on vacation?' I was like, 'You have no idea. It's 10 to 12 hours of rehab a day, seven days a week.'”
“It was intense. I'm not gonna lie. It was very intense,” Cruise said.
“Fallout” will feature intense scenes, including a crazy motorcycle chase. Tom commented, “I love motorcycles, but driving in traffic [on one] — that was a new challenge.”
When asked if he gets scared, Tom answered, “Oh, you feel the adrenaline… I'm not wearing a helmet, so I have to focus. I'm not cocky about it.”
Cruise is famous for doing his own stunts. He admitted, “I can't help myself. I just cannot help myself. How far can I go to entertain an audience? It's been my whole career.”
“Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is in theaters July 27.
