Mexican Icon Juan Gabriel Dead at 66
Mexican entertainer Juan Gabriel, recognized as an icon in the world of music, died Sunday morning of a massive heart attack at 66.
Gabriel had been recording since 1971, and had revived his career recently with tours so successful he ranked #18 on Billboard's 2015 Money Makers list. His tour and his "Los Duo" album were the biggest sellers in the Latin market last year.
Gabriel was in the middle of another hot world tour, his MeXXico Es Todos tour, traveling to 22 cities and playing to sold-out crowds at the time of his unexpected death. He performed at L.A.'s The Forum Friday night — his shows were often as long as five hours — but succumbed to a heart attack while preparing to go on to El Paso, Texas.
THR reports Gabriel had 31 songs on the Hot Latin Songs Billboard chart since 1986, and was covered by many top artists, including Marc Anthony.
Last week, what would become Gabriel's final album during his lifetime, "Vestido de Etiqueta: Por Eduardo Magallanes," debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. A Telemundo series about the singer's life was scheduled to air in the fall.
Gabriel is survived by his four children.
