'The Sound of Music' Star Charmian Carr Dead at 73

Charmian Carr, known to generations of film fans as Liesl in the 1965 movie classic "The Sound of Music," has died at 73 after battling a rare form of dementia.
According to a long press release posted to her official site, Carr's only other major acting role was in the TV musical "Evening Primrose" opposite the late Anthony Perkins. That telefilm contained songs by Stephen Sondheim.
Carr's contribution to "The Sound of Music" was huge — she sang the beloved song "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." At the time, she was actually 21 going on 22.
"Julie Andrews was so kind to me," Carr said in a TV interview. "It's been a wonderful, wonderful part of my life... It's really a wonderful feeling to know that you've been in a film that's affected so many people, that has made them so happy. It's better than, you know, 'The Terminator,' or things like that. If you're gonna do one movie, I think I chose the right one to do."
Carr is survived by her children and grandchildren, a niece, and four siblings.
