Angelina Jolie Blasts President Trump for Travel Ban — Why She Says He Is ‘Playing with Fire'
Actress Angelina Jolie is calling out President Trump for his controversial travel ban, part of which prevents Syrian refugees from entering the U.S. and halts the refugee resettlement program.
In a piece for The New York Times, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees emphasized that Trump is “playing with fire” by closing the door to refugees and discriminating against them on the "basis of religion."
She explained the importance of facts in policy-making, saying, "The global refugee crisis and the threat from terrorism make it entirely justifiable that we consider how best to secure our borders. Every government must balance the needs of its citizens with its international responsibilities. But our response must be measured and should be based on facts, not fear... It is simply not true that our borders are overrun or that refugees are admitted to the United States without close scrutiny.”
"Shutting our door to refugees or discriminating among them is not our way, and does not make us safer. Acting out of fear is not our way. Targeting the weakest does not show strength,” Jolie continued.
Angie went on say of terrorism, "We all want to keep our country safe. So we must look to the sources of the terrorist threat — to the conflicts that give space and oxygen to groups like the Islamic State, and the despair and lawlessness on which they feed. We have to make common cause with people of all faiths and backgrounds fighting the same threat and seeking the same security. This is where I would hope any president of our great nation would lead on behalf of all Americans.”
Along with politics, Angelina is also promoting her new passion project, “First They Killed My Father,” a Netflix movie she directed that is based on the autobiography of her friend, Cambodian human rights activist Loung Ung. In a new promo for the film, she says, "The heart of it is Loung's story, it's the story of a war through the eyes of a child, but it is also the story of a country.” Watch!
