Ludacris Reflects on George Floyd’s Memorial, Plus: How He’s Teaching Kids About Current Events
Grammy-winning artist Ludacris is showing his support for George Floyd.
Just days after attending a memorial for Floyd, “Extra's” Nate Burleson spoke with Ludacris, who opened up on the experience. He shared, “I just went there to pay my respects and also to try and understand how I can continue to help in this fight of racial injustice… I'm here to learn, I'm here to continue to learn.”
When asked if he was able to connect with anyone close to Floyd, Ludacris said, “They're going through extreme times right now and we just wanted to let them know we were going to go back to their cities and continue the fight and they need to stay strong for all of us and we'll stay strong for them.”
The rapper is staying strong in the fight against racism, marching in a protest over the weekend in Atlanta. He emphasized, “This is going to be a long fight because we have been fighting technically for around 400 years... so, respectfully, be in it for the long haul and really what I mean by that is be sure you teach your children, because we're not going to be here for 401 years — but generations after us will.”
Ludacris, 42, is releasing new music that is very timely, including his track “Silence of the Lambs,“ which features Lil Wayne addressing some controversial names of our times. He pointed out, “I just really want to spark thought and I think that's what great art does.”
The “Fast & Furious” star has also co-founded the new media platform, Kid Nation, which aims to educate children about current events through music. The platform, set to launch in the fall, is moving up the release of the song “Get Along,” which encourages unity during a time of unrest. He explained, “From children's standpoint, they just really wish that we could get along. Police, black people, white people, no matter what your race… It's hard having these conversations, but it makes it a little easier when I'm making this art that they'll be able to listen to over and over.”
As for what he hopes, Luda reiterated, “We're seeing slow change happening right now... let's continue... we got to continue to do everything in our power to keep the pressure on.”
