Jason Statham Talks Movie Stunts After Stuntman Injury on 'Fast & Furious 9'
Jason Statham is known for his action films, and “Hobbs & Shaw” is no exception. “Extra” special correspondent Mark Wright was in London with the star, who opened up about stunts in the wake of news a stunt double was injured while filming “Fast & Furious 9.”
The Hollywood Reporter says stuntman Joe Watts suffered a major fall resulting in a “serious head injury” and is now in an induced coma. It is believed the accident involved Watts leaping from a balcony while attached to a safety wire.
Jason said, “It is awful. It's an unpredictable science... You do every measure that you can to eliminate these things from happening. It's just a real shame that accidents happen. It's awful for the families… when someone gets really hurt.” He went on to say, “On set, the stunt people are and have been for my whole career the best relationships I have and the most fun I have ever had on a set, always with the stunt guys.”
Statham continued, “I feel they are the unsung heroes in some ways. They put themselves out there to make other people look good without anything back.”
Jason does some of his own stunts, explaining, “We are pretty smart about not putting ourselves in harm's way. The studio for these big movies, they don't want you to do anything. It is just one of the risks that they don't want you to take.”
He pointed out, “When you do a small movie… I did 'The Transporter,' they couldn't afford a stunt double, I did almost every little piece that I could do.”
In "Hobbs & Shaw," Dwayne Johnson and Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, teaming up to take down an anarchist played by Idris Elba.
Jason said he had a ball bantering with Dwayne on set. "We're allowed to say the F bomb once," he recalled. "We have to share it — we say it at the same time. You have to be really clever how you do the insults. A lot of it's written… You just go with the flow and I think Dave Leitch is the director that allows you to just give it a go and see what happens.”
He said Dwayne keeps fit all the time while filming. “He's a man machine, to achieve that level of physicality, it's an incredible focus… He has a little cheat day here and there and we all know about it.”
“Hobbs & Shaw” opens August 2.
