Cheryl Tiegs Doesn’t Approve of ‘Full-Figured’ Models, Thinks Sports Illustrated Cover Girl Ashley Graham Is Unhealthy
UPDATE: Cheryl Tiegs later clarified her comments, tweeting, "To clarify re bodyweight. Being anorexic/bulimic/overweight all connected to health problems. I want all to be as healthy as they can."
Actress and former model Cheryl Tiegs is criticizing Sports Illustrated for featuring a curvy woman on their Swimsuit Edition.
The magazine chose Ronda Rousey, Ashley Graham and Hailey Clauson as cover girls for three versions of the issue. Tiegs, who has been featured on magazine covers a couple of times, told E! News, "I don't like that we're talking about full-figured women, because it's glamorizing them, because your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches]. That's what Dr. Oz said, and I'm sticking to it. No, I don't think it's healthy. [Ashley's] face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don't think it's healthy in the long run.”
Graham hasn't responded to Tiegs' comments, but did tell Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday's episode of “Ellen” that she is not a fan of the term “plus-size” model. She explained, "I like to call it, like, curvasexalicious. Sizing has gotten frightening. There's a double 0 now. It's a little scary on both spectrums of weight. I'm not a promoter of anorexia. I'm not a promoter of obesity. I think we have to promote women to be healthy at every size, as long as they're getting off the couch and moving their body.” Watch!
Aside from her Sports Illustrated cover, Ashley is gearing up to launch her first swimwear line with Swimsuitsforall, which will be available in May.
