Legendary Director Wes Craven of 'Scream' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Fame Dies at 76
Wes Craven, the writer and director of some of the most indelible horror classics of all time—including "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) and "Scream" (1990), featuring the haunting character "Freddy Krueger"—has died of brain cancer at 76.
Craven's contributions to film produced the genre classics "The Last House on the Left" (1972), "The Hills Have Eyes" (1977), "The People Under the Stairs" (1991), as well as multiple sequels to "Nightmare" and "Scream."

Craven's final released film as a director was "Scream 4" (2011), while the final film he directed was "My Soul to Take" (2010).
The director's most recent tweet was to congratulate actress/playwright Danai Gurira, while the tweet he pinned at the top of his account was one of encouragement to newcomers:
