Hospitalized! Jeannie Mai Forced to Leave ‘Dancing with the Stars’
“The Real” co-host Jeannie Mai is leaving “Dancing with the Stars” early, due to health concerns.
On Monday, Mai revealed that she has been diagnosed with epiglottis, a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause swelling and block airflow to the lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In a statement to “Good Morning America,” Mai said, “My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat which requires immediate attention and surgery. I am heartbroken that my 'DWTS' journey has to end here."
"I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we've come," Mai continued.
Just last week, Mai and her pro dance partner Brandon Armstrong escaped elimination after being in the bottom two. They were saved by judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
This week was supposed to be a double elimination, but with Mai's exit, only one contestant will be sent home.
After news broke about Mai's exit and hospitalization, “Dancing with the Stars” said, “Jeannie has inspired us, along with millions of fans, with her energy and dedication. We wish her a full and speedy recovery. Since Jeannie had to withdraw from the competition, tonight's show will feature the eight remaining couples and a single elimination."
“Extra's” Billy Bush spoke with “Dancing with the Stars” judge Bruno Tonioli after the news.
In an Instagram video, Cheryl Burke and AJ McLean sent their well-wishes to Jeannie. AJ captioned the video, "Jeannie, you have become such a close friend and light in our lives during this show and it's so hard to see you go."
